Why You Should Take Shoulder Workouts Seriously

When was the last time you thought about your shoulders? Unless they’re troubling you you probably don’t think about them at all.

Shoulder Workout at Home

Without well-functioning shoulders we wouldn’t be able to:

  • Raise and lower our arms
  • Throw a ball
  • Brush our hair
  • Push and pull
  • Lift things

Our shoulders are the most functionable joints in our body. We need to make sure we’re paying attention to them. We can help you take care of them with shoulder exercises, like you’ll find in our Kinstretch® courses. They are a great way to get your shoulder workout at home.

Why Avoiding Shoulder Exercises Can Lead To Trouble

If you don’t take care of your shoulders it’s bad news. It means you could:

  • Lose range of motion
  • Be more prone to injury
  • Be more likely to experience shoulder instability
  • Be plagued with frozen shoulder

None of these experiences are fun.

Let’s look at the types of injuries that can result from troubled shoulders.

A torn rotator cuff

Torn Rotator Cuff Diagram
  • Can be caused by something as simple as breaking a fall with an outstretched hand.
  • Lifting a heavy object with your arm outstretched (think putting a carry-on suitcase in the overhead bin on a plane!)
  • A torn rotator cuff can be extremely painful and often requires surgery.

Shoulder dislocation

Dislocated Shoulder Diagram
  • Typically caused by shoulder instability.
  • This means that the shoulder joint is much too loose, allowing the head of the arm bone to slip out of the socket.
  • The most common situations where dislocation of unstable shoulders can occur are those that Involve any kind of activity that require overhead motion, such as sports or frequent lifting.

The dreaded frozen shoulder

It is exactly as it sounds.

Frozen Shoulder Diagram
  • A frozen shoulder is a situation where pain and stiffness seriously affect the shoulder’s range of motion.
  • Frozen shoulders can be caused by an injury, or inflammation in the shoulder joints due to overuse (think sports or lifting).

The Best Way To Take Care Of Your Shoulders

question marks

So maybe now you’re starting to think a bit more about your shoulders, and how much (or how little) you’ve been taking care of them. But how DO you take care of them? You can:

  • Keep a balanced posture
  • Make sure your fitness routine is helpful
  • Keep shoulders as mobile as possible, and then learn how to control that movement
  • Find three dimensional movement to avoid repetitive strain

Kinstretch® is a great way to take care of your shoulders because Kinstretch® combines mobility and control into single movements.

Shoulder Exercises

With Kinstretch® you are moving your bones through their entire range of motion with some body weight resistance that helps your brain understand how they move. Thus getting mobility and control all at once. This allows for deeper integration of the movement and change in your tissues.
