Being that you’re post-menopausal, and there is a history of osteoporosis in your family bone density became a main topic at your doctor appointments a few years ago. Your last bone density test showed that your numbers were lower than average and you are in the early stages of osteoporosis.

Our bones are constantly at work replacing old bone tissue with new. This process naturally slows as we age, but osteoporosis is a condition where the body loses too much, or makes too little, bone tissue to replace the old, which leaves your bones brittle, weak and more likely to break. And breaking bones is very important to avoid as you get older.

Can we fix it? The short answer is no, but all hope is not lost.

Physical activity and exercise keep or make your bones strong, but having already lost bone mass it is critical to do exercises that are safe for your bones.

Not so fun fact: Vertebral fractures in your spine can be painless and go undetected. You could be exercising and doing more harm than good without knowing it.

In Pilates for Osteoporosis, we will be doing Pilates-based exercises that condition our bodies to accept load-in weight-bearing exercises for both the upper and lower extremities, and have been modified to protect someone who has osteoporosis or osteopenia.

And by modified we don’t mean easier. We mean doing exercises to reduce risk of injury for folks with lower bone density.

Bonus benefit: Balance.
Improving balance plays just as big of a role in this class as strengthening our bones.

A person with osteoporosis or osteopenia is more likely to break bone(s) with a fall.
Improving balance plays just as big of a role in this class as strengthening our bones.

These classes will challenge and train our bodies so we avoid, or catch ourselves, from falling.
